Besides a hard-kill system against torpedoes, the use of sea drones in the present Ukraine war suggests a need for short-range defence against asymmetric surface threats. ASW rockets with contact fuses seem like they could be useful against kamikaze atacks by unmanned surface or underwater craft, since this was used on Shanghai-class patrol boats versus the ROCN back in the 1960s. The latest 054A frigates and the 003 carrier are PLAN's only major surface combatants that have ASW rockets that are in the process of construction/fitting out/trials and it is surprising that they have not beem brought back for the most recent 052D/055 variants.
