Back in Suharto's era, Indonesians were not these fanatics like today. In fact, there were many who didn't even wear hijabs. The majority still not that fanatics, I saw a family with the wife wearing hijab, drinking beers not too long ago. In nightclubs, many are also drinking alcohol, of course not wearing hijabs. The hardliners do grow significantly, especially for the past 15 years or so. The Saudi used to finance the madrasahs in Indonesia, and since then the hardliners are growing like plague. They even want to discard their own culture to embrace Arab's culture, which is insane in my opinion.
