yes, there were originally from Yunnan just like the Malays & Indonesians and they don't look like in the pictures you posted. The Malays and Indonesians moved further south but the Lao and Khmers stayed. But all had that Hindu influenced religion and used Sanskrit script. Only a few hundred years ago, the Malays and Indonesians converted to Islam but in Bali remnants of the Hindu culture is still around.
