Bangladesh under Hasina was not so bad, she is at least pro business, and she knew stability is important. Would Bangladesh become a developed country under Hasina? I doubt it. In fact I think Bangladesh will not be able to break through the middle income trap if they ever reach that position in the future. But Hasina was their best bet. Unlike China all weather friend, Pakistan, Hasina succeeded in controlling the military and the Islamists, and made the country relatively stable for business. Bangladesh also relatively big in textile industry. The current crisis in Bangladesh frankly caused by external factor, bad global economy condition and high inflation hit Bangladesh particularly hard, and all resentments that Hasina managed to keep under control all these years, resurfaced. She made a terrible mistake of not yielding fast enough when they demanded reform in government recruitment, and then launch a bloody crack down when it is already too late. Now with her gone, I'm afraid Bangladesh will only get worsen. Kinda remind me of Indonesia after the fall of Suharto. It was a messy time, and only time could tell how long it will be before Bangladesh could find stability again. They elected Yunus, 80s years old guy to lead the caretaker. He is smart, but I wonder if he can handle the job with his age. Then there are military and Islamists. They might lay low for now, pretty sure they will soon show their fangs.
Myanmar case is indeed interesting and quite concerning for China. Frankly, I always think China should have established a navy port in Myanmar long time ago, and cut a deal like what the US did with friendly Cuban gov prior to Castro on Guantananmo case. Port like Kyaukphyu Port is strategically important for China's security.
