First, if the PLA is strong enough to either fight off a US attack or deter one (and when Japan was truly insane, nothing deterred it from attacking multiple stronger countries at the same time). Second, if the US loses international support and Chinese soft poer in Taiwan is enough to deter TIers.

It should not be assumed that the US is a rational actor.
