The mainland will be under severe internal political pressure to invade in such a case, which will give the US an excuse to fight (many Americans, both politicians and the general public, are itching for a war with China, and this would distract US citizens from the current internal problems). If you don't think this is a realistic possibility, look at the renaming of China Airlines and other signs of creeping secession.
