Some context, probably few people here, if any, are aware of the controversy surrouding Ubisoft's latest game Assassin Creed Shadow. ACS is an Assassin Creed entry with story in feudal Japan. Originally there was a male Japanese Samurai protagonist along with a female shinobi side kick. For DEI purpose, Ubisoft decided to race swap the Japanese samurai with a black samurai, citing the existence of a historical character Yasuke, who is a black slave broght to Japan by Portuguese missionary. Historically this person was not a samurai, but Ubisoft potrayed him as a historical accurate samurai, pissing off the Japanese. Is this racist? Long story short suffice to say the Japanese are not thrill playing as a black person killing Japanese people, including NPC on the street, with a hip hop battle music (Ubisoft changed tune after backlash).Basically I think black samurai killing Asian may be racist to certain degree. Here's the clip showing Yasuke is able to attack Japanese NPC, including religious person such as Shinto priest, even demolising the Shinto shrine. Yasuke can literally go on steet rampage and blow out NPC head killing them without consequence.
Then it's shown that Ubisoft make Yasuke unable to attack a Portuguese merchant. Besides taking no damage, the Portuguese NPC doesn't response to Yasuke's attack, he just give way due to game physics pushing him aside. It appear Ubisoft go out of their way to make sure white NPC can't be attacked by the black samurai while Asian NPC can be killed. If all NPC can be attacked and killed, it can be blamed on an insensitive gameplay. When which NPC can be killed is based on its skin color, if this is not racist what is?
Other DEI stuff Ubisoft baked into ACS include this woman sumo pro. There is of course no woman pro sumo in Japan up to this day. Ubisoft just want to have a girl boss of strength in a male dominated career. I'm surprise they haven't make woman samurai already, but they did make this woman sumo able to kick male samurai butt.
BTW, this game jurno Morgan Park is sucking Ubisoft dick as the game journo always do. This jurno could be the suck of death for Ubisoft, who probably won't survive the flop of ACS, which is almost certain now.
