Looking at the west today, there several types of people exist
1. The right wing that want to stop China rise at all cost
2. The Chine doves, mostly scholars, that want China to be subservient to the west and hopefull it will calm the right wingers and to avoid conflict
3. The leftist, who support China because China presence help their agenda to null their countries' excessive capitalism and foreign adventurism
It is clear number one is the enemy of China, but number two and three are also not a very reliable partner.
I remember what Charles Li said in Davos, I think, few years ago about the west and China relationship.
He said: "If the problem is unbalanced trade, then it is not a problem. A problem that can be solved with money, is not a problem to China. But if the west want China to reform and cut subsidy like your friend want you to stop smoking or live healthy, then it will take some time, but it is also doable. But if the west want China to change itself, to speak English, to read Bible, go to Church etc, then it is not going to happen. In the US, there are many kind of voices. Some want the first one, some want the second one, then there are also people in the US that want the third one. If China didn't do the first and second one, then the third one will be on the table."
I think what he said is spot on, and now the third voice become the loudest one in the west, particularly in America.
What can China do now? IMHO, China is dealing with America like Holyfield dealt with Mike Tyson. When Tyson tried to aggressively attack Holyfield, Holyfield tactic is to keep hugging Tyson to nullify Tyson's attack and exhaust him. In the end, Tyson ended up exhausted all his stamina and few of his punches landed on Holyfield, and Tyson lost the match. The US is now aggressively attacking China through trade war, tech embargo and supply rerouting. Meanwhile except in the early phase of trade war, which in my opinion, is China way to warn the US, but when it fail to change the Americans, China today mostly didn't react much to the US attack. Instead, China continue to do business with the US companies, while diversifying its businesses and gradually dedollarize itself. This is a long struggle and patient is very much needed, not just for the leadership, but for the Chinese people.
