For poor countries, food consumption is the indicator----In 1978, just after the cultural revolution, chinese grain production was about 305 mil tons @popn of 975 mil----it was about what india produced in 2021@ popn of 1400 mil

Another indicator is steel production: chinese fig pasted 100 mil ton in 1996 and the hindus reached that mark in 2019 (not counting popn difference)

One can also check figs on cement, energy...
