That act would have been seen as utterly ineffectual, since no intercept could possibly have resulted in diverting Pelosi from landing in Taiwan short of actually shooting her down. So either you start a war, or you look like an aggressive bully with no teeth and no muscle, just talk. Either way China loses big time, and has nothing to gain from it except a dangerous action that could result in catastrophic miscalculation and war.
