otherwise the US military is simply too powerful and will also act in conjunction with Japan. The US has had a de facto "one China one Taiwan" for decades. I think the current attempts at escalation are to distract from domestic problems, and I am not sure a majority of Americans believe what they are told by the government/media (Pelosi is widely believed to be corrupt in various ways and her husband was recently arrested for drunk driving, which is very rare for someone so politically important). I do know that there is considerable public opposition in Taiwan to a Pelosi visit, and that nobody seriously thinks Taiwan can be made into a "porcupine".
