I'm not saying China should stop chasing the self reliance. I'm just saying that China need to have some interim plan before China can achieve self reliance. Otherwise, a lot of Chinese tech could go belly up before China even achieve self reliance, that nobody can tell when it can happen. China should have dual track strategy. For long term, continue the research to achieve tech self reliance. In the short term, focus the most of the research funding on inventing tech that can replace US parts in the lithography machines that the ASML or Japanese sell. It is not ASML or Japanese corporations that don't want to sell to China, it is the US. They just can't resist the US because of the US tech in their products. If China can help them replace those tech, then they will have less incentive to comply with the US. This is what China should prioritize now. It is also not against the long term plan of achieving self reliance in tech since the tech that they successfully made can also be used in the long term plan to achieve complete self reliance.
