What Russia should have used as justification is the fact that Ukraine backtracked from Minsk Agreement one sidedly and allowing NATO to encroach Russia and threaten Russia national security. Russia should also keep pointing out the human right abuse conducted by Ukraine against Russian speaking people of Donbass region. Instead Russia made it all about war against Neo Nazi in Ukraine, which is a very weak justification for war. This is also used by the western propaganda media to attack Russia.

Btw, it seemed Putin is going to have medical treatment for his cancer. I wonder what the heck would happen if Putin is gone, and the war is not yet finished. I really doubtful his successor would be at least half as capable as Putin. Putin maybe corrupt, but at least he is capable and he loves his mother Russia and he believe in Russia's place as one of the great power of the world. His successor might be incompetent or worse a sell out who gave up Russia's destiny as great power to be western lapdogs in return for economic benefits. The fall of Russia will throw central asia into open season for great game between China and the west. Chechnya and other regions might be tempted to split from Russia too.
