It's clear from the photos that the missile strikes did not hit the Sandbox launchers at all, otherwise they would show damage. The SAM fire control radar was also in a default stowed position at the time of sinking, suggesting that the ship was taken by surprise or otherwise unable to defend itself. Supposedly a Chinese military enthusiast visited a Slava during a port visit and noticed some of the watertight doors were not operable and held closed using ropes.
