The Slavas have 64 Rif/Fort SAMs (051C only has 48), a lot of Gecko short-range SAMs, and six AK-630 (more than any PLAN ship) for a hard kill. Even if the story about "distracting" it with a TB-2 is credible, two missiles could not possibly have saturated Moskva's air defences. Either there were many more missiles fired (I do not believe this to be the case, even with substantial Western aid), some unknown ECM/ECCM is involved, or the Russian navy was asleep at the wheel. I suspect the latter.

Russian damage control is not great and that probably contributed to the ship's sinking. PLAN should take heed of this, and probably already has since the Liaoning was commissioned after significant upgrades to her firefighting and washdown systems. I don't think PLAN is up to USN standards of damage control but they are paying more attention to this area recently.

IIRC this is only the fifth time shore-based antiship missiles have actually struck a warship. The first was the Falklands war when an Exocet launcher removed from an Argentinian ship was made into an improvised coastal battery and sank a British warship. The second was the Israeli corvette Hanit, struck a glancing blow from a C-701 or C-801 and did not sink. The fourth incidents occurred in Yemen a few years ago, the US SWATH ship Swift which was contracted out to the UAE at the time, was seriously damaged by missiles launched by Houthis. The Hanit and Moskva had close-in defences, in the case of Hanit they were not turned on as Hezbollah was not thought to have antiship missiles.

Of course, the question everyone has is what bearing does this have on a Taiwan scenario?
