921 is basically strapping three CZ-5's 5 m diameter core stages together and rearrange CZ-5 YF-100 engine in cluster. Because 921 reuse existing CZ-5 technology, it can be developed quicker with higher maturity, it was originally CNSA's plan B for lunar mission, except now it may move from back stage to front stage as they're going to rely on its maturity for manned mission. Project 921 actually refer to the Chinese manned space programme approved in Sep 21, 1992.

CZ-9 has a 10 m diameter core stage, it doesn't use older proven engine as none of the existing engine has the thrust it needed, whether the 2011 or 2021 edition
