1. This article has two themes. One is Scientific American discusses briefly about Chinese quantum efforts. At certain points it seemed confusing, as the details could be mixed up. Two is they keep talking about funding, which seems like this article is advertisement for academic researchers to go get that US Federal funding for their projects.

2. That is the political climate in the United States at the moment, that China is persona non grata. Basically everything that China does is viewed as illegitimate, even when it builds better and working quantum computers. It is reality, but Americans must write it in a way that only suggests that reality. Suckas!

3. Well, obviously, the Chinese team will build a better machine. It is truly scalable, as this time they only added 2 more qbits, to just move ahead of the Google experiment. Don't you think they are just being playful at this juncture? University of Science and Technology of China could have added more, as this is scalable.

66 qbits is 2 more than the number 64. That is how the usual computer processor specs, 16-bit, 32-bit, 64-bit processors. Nothing stopping them from going to 75, 100, or 128 qbits. I would hope they go to 128 qbits and keep with the tradition of the numbering specs of the old computer.

At this point, it bloggers the mind what they are able to compute. I am no scientist, so I really do not know. When they compute something that big, it could lead to more questions which needs more of these computing solutions.

New quantum computing solutions should raise new questions, which in turn requires more quantum computing solutions, creating more questions. The cycle feeds on itself. This quantum computer should propel scientific study forward in a big way. Right now, China is very much ahead IMHO with this optical system, that is reliable, scalable, and programmable.
