because early European-style printing presses were inked with hog-bristle brushes. I'm not sure how widely accepted this view is (it's commonly said that the act of hand-copying a Koran is prayerful and printing might profane it, or that the complex ligatures of the Arabic script made printing unfeasible). While it might seem reasonable at first, couldn't some other type of animal be easily substituted? How was Bi Sheng's moveable type inked? What about block printing? China has had a huge Muslim community since the Tang Dynasty, living alongside Buddhists who were the first to print any religious texts. Is there any evidence of printed Korans (or any sort of hadiths/religious commentary/exegesis in Arabic) in China?
