--They occupy U campus basically for 2 reasons, 1)try to create an image of 'educated', 'academic freedom' and 'free thinkers' 2)Have the notion U campus has certain degree of automony,ie off-bound to cops. A very senior HKPD officer neighbor who lives one floor up mine told me that 'autonomy' only applies to buildings, not interlinking roads nor sewage(I also raised question on internet communication but I decide not to elaborate what he told me, haha..)
--HK local election will take place coming sunday and I expect those 'pro-democrazy' parties to lose badly.
The only person I discussed the matter with and voiced support for those rioters happened to an election campaign volunteer for one of those 'pro-democrazy' politicians; some of the smarter 'pro-democrazy' politicians actually have changed their tune
