Conversely, were our Warring States period ancestors still Chinese since their society and civilisation were so different from the modern period? As for diet, I don't really know what Chinese people ate before the Spanish conquest of the New World, but modern staples like potatoes, maize corn, and tomatoes did not exist then. And don't tell me that those aren't staples - they may not be so in HK but potatoes and corn were traditionally much more important than rice in the North.
