Carriers can hold at risk enemy vessels that are thousands of km away from the fleet, especially if we are talking about fighters with 1,000+ km ranges launching antiship missiles with 1,000+ km ranges. Combined with effective air superiority and ASW, a good carrier force can control a very large volume of sea and air around it.
