goes down the tubes economically (as in massive economic depression) and desperately needs a savior, or China changes into some form of democracy and Taiwan develops a China fetish just like it has a Japan fetish. Other than that it's war or nothing.Right now more and more Taiwanese, especially the younger generations, feel that there is a distinct Taiwanese culture and identity and no longer feel any attachment to their historic Chinese roots. This trend will only continue in the future if the cross-Strait situation continues as a stalemate. Right now I see China's military growing stronger faster than Taiwan's independence-minded young population. Will this trend continue in the long term? Who knows. But even if it does, we may in the future have a Chinese military that is easily able to overwhelm the Taiwanese military, only to face a Taiwanese population that is overwhelming opposed to Chinese rule. Think of Hong Kong's Umbrella Revolution of 2014, only a thousand times more violent and in every Taiwanese city.
