Without a large full time two ocean navy, China cannot protect this. The US just needs to take a few of these places to isolate China. The US took back the Panama Canal without even thinking about China retaliating. There were no consequences. Because they knew China was too weak to do anything about it. Canal would've been safer under Russia.
