to declare their AMCA as 5.5 gen. Don't know what their 5.5 gen constitute. Probably operating the CATS. Accordingly, they claim while AMCA Mk1 will be a 5 gen, Mk2 will incorporate 6 gen technologies such as smart wingman concept, swarm drones, long persistent HALE (High-Altitude Long Endurance) platforms and hypersonic weapons, blah blah. Even third gen plane can incorporate these without a change to itself.

Some spec of the CATS: speed 0.7 mach, payload 250 kg, range 800 km => combat radius < 400 km. So addition of this make AMCA 5.5 gen?

What was promised vs what is delivered. Not really delivered yet because they're still yet to test its engine PTAE-W with only 380 kg thrust.

Incidentally it looks similar to a Chinese maneuverable stealth target drone.

I suspect PAF is going to fly 5 gen fighter sooner than IAF.
