Chinese tech risk suffering galapagos syndrome like Japan did. Focusing too much on home court, being comfortable and complacent. Just look at Wechat, it had a chance to be global power when whatsapp was not yet as prevalent as today, but Wechat surely took it sweet time and even make it difficult for foreigners to register, and now global market is taken by Whatsapp. The same thing keep repeating. Few have vision and courage like Bytedance to go global since beginning.
Huawei is facing uphill battle if it want to replicate its success at home. The world is dominated by American apps, and Huawei has no access of them, at least officially. How can Huawei persuade foreign customers to buy its phone if it has no access to Whatsapp, Google, etc. But not all is lost, even popular apps can fade to oblivion if it can't keep up, anyone still remember friendster? Huawei and Chinese tech companies need to go global and be more innovative than the US counterparts. They also need to work with foreign local apps. Even Europe is uncomfortable to let the American apps dominating their region. Huawei should work with their local tech companies, creating regional apps that can reduce the American apps domination.
