Remind me of growing up in indonesia under suharto apartheid regime, I could understand why some Chinese heritage people made decision like hers. It is a self protection mechanism. It is hard to live in a society that want to oblitrate your identity at all cost. I remember when I was a kid, my parents had to secretly playing Chinese movies VHS at our own home because it was illegal to have anything with Chinese language. A friend of my father, have business of Chinese book rental, illegal of course. One of his customers got caught by authority, and the customer ratted him out, and he was picked up by the police and tortured by the police to force him to give up the rest of his customers. He chose to keep his mouth shut and suffered broken legs and hands. Not every one could do that.
