I have been saying this for years, China should get rid of the checkpoint, and unify HK and Macao border custom with mainland. Let the flow of people from both SAR freely travel to and from China. Hkers who can't afford HK housing should really move to mainland China, not just Shenzhen, but also cheaper cities that surround Shenzhen. After all, China main goal is to unify Pearl River Delta Region into a megacity. This will also help HKers integrate better with Mainlanders. This checkpoint is a self defeating system. I could understand why they maintained it in the past, to cater to the western businesses who want a sense of system that they are familiar with in Greater China region. But with the geopolitics today, I said screw them, adapt or get the frack out.
