The westerly view from across Dupont, looking at the southwest corner of its intersection with Jackson Street and up the hill. No date, but post-1894, according to local transit historian Emiliano Echeverria, “as horsecar tracks are already gone, and 1894 was when they were removed.” Photographer unknown (from a private collection).

The street vendor in the foreground of the above photo is using the corner’s sewer drain for watering/washing his wares. The image isn’t the clearest, but the basket immediately behind him appears to hold vegetables, rather than flowers. The photo shows at right a portion of the Jackson Street frontage of the old Globe Hotel building which occupied a large lot at the northwest corner of the intersection of Dupont and Jackson. A portion of the Viennese-style, window enframement detail can be seen at the top of the photo above the horses’ heads. (The visible fire escape is interesting, as no such ironwork is evident in the earlier photos of the Globe Hotel building.) Just behind the carriage, at the north sidewalk’s ground level the lanterns for photographer Carleton Watkins’ “Jackson St. restaurant” are visible, the exterior and interior of which served as the subjects for Watkins’ series of stereographs (i.e., 3701 and the interior shots in the tea room in his 3760-series). The building occupied by the Yuen Fong Low restaurant at 710 Jackson St. appears adjacent to the Globe building. The frontage of the herbalist store at the 708 Jackson St. address next door to the restaurant is obscured by the sun awnings. The drugstore use was observed and noted on the city’s “vice” map of 1885, and such use continued as indicated by the business listed at the 708 address in the Horn Hom directory of 1892.  - Doug Chan

Yuen Fong Low
