Too bad the cropped cover photo is flipped (probably because the Library of Congress has many online photos reversed). The photo's title is “Carrying New Year Presents” c. 1900–1905. Photograph by Arnold Genthe (from the Genthe photograph collection, The Library of Congress, Prints and Photographs Division). A cable car can be seen on the hill just behind the head of the young woman in the photo. She appears to have been a servant to the family of prominent merchant Lew Kan. The boy in the photo is Lew Bing Yuen, the older son, who also appears in Genthe’s well-known photo “Children of the High Class.” The woman’s plain dress (in contrast to the boy’s seasonal garb), shows clearly that she was not the boy’s mother or sister.
The intersection shown behind the figures in the photo would be the intersection of Dupont and Sacramento Streets. When viewed correctly, partial business signage appears in the upper left-hand quadrant of the picture, from which the partial name of “…G LUNG & CO.” appears with the word “Goods” below the company name and other indecipherable lettering. The San Francisco public health map of July 1885 shows that the address at the southeastern corner was 625 Dupont
