As you probably know, game media outlets in particular IGN have a hard time accepting a Chinese made game hit. They wrote article smearing the developer of sexism based on fake news. IGN rating of the two games that came out at the same time, BMWK and Concord have a significant discrepancy with user rating.
You also probably have heard about the Sweet Baby extortion fiasco. A DEI "consultant" company asked for 7 million and got rejected. Some media outlets even put BMWK lack of DEI as a con. Compared to two other game launched in the same week, Concord and Dust Born, which both touted DEI, you can clearly see DEI is not a selling point.
In fact, Concord asked for removal of its LGBTQ tag after launching to a disappointing reception. Sony invested like 300 million in the studio who spent 8 years developed this game, it shutdown and refund all buyers in two weeks.
Here's a review that contain a bit of spoiler (with warning to skip). Also poking fun at IGN expense.
