Kevin Connor Published May 08, 2023

Mayoral candidate Olivia Chow has increased her margin as more voters decide who they will cast a ballot for next month, a new poll by Liaison Strategies showed. Article content

The poll for the National Ethnic Press and Media Council of Canada said Chow increased her lead, while the battle for second place was between Mark Saunders and Josh Matlow.

The poll said 32% of Toronto voters were undecided, which was a new low and a drop of 13 points from last month.

“Olivia Chow is up one point in this week’s survey among decided voters” said David Valentin, principal of Liaison Strategies.

“But she has grown her lead from six points to 11 points this week because her opposition is fragmented. Among decided voters, Chow leads with 27% followed by Saunders and Matlow, tied for second at 16% each.”

The survey found that among all voters, including those undecided, Chow was at 18%, Matlow and Saunders were at 11%, Brad Bradford was at 8%, Mitzie Hunter was at 7%, Ana Bailao was at 6% and Anthony Furey at 1% Article content

Among decided voters, Chow was at 27%, Matlow and Saunders at 16%, Bradford at 12%, Hunter at 10%, Bailao at 9%, and Furey at 2%.

“There is still a lot of campaigning still to go and debates have not yet begun, but so far the trend line has been positive for Chow’s campaign. With turnout a question mark and so many candidates in the race, it’s very possible Toronto’s next mayor will be elected with a relatively small number of votes,” Valentin said.

The poll was conducted on Friday and Saturday with 1,257 Toronto voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.76%, 19 times out of 20.

Did not know she was running for mayor, I thought she had retired.

She used to be a social worker, before she went into city politics. Been a fixture in Toronto city politics for decades, then she kind of retired. A nice Cantonese woman, that everyone kind of knew in Chinatown.

Vancouver has an ethnic Chinese mayor. Not sure if he is a Cantonese too.

These poll number probably means she is going to win. Toronto and Vancouver, could be the two largest cities in Canada, both will have ethnic Chinese mayors.

Just saying that all this talk about racism in Canada, trade war, blah blah blah, well, just how important is it really?

Sure, there has to be some racism, but that did not stop 鄒至蕙 going all the way to the top.
