It is the same modus operandi since then.  After Mohammad Mosaddegh got elected and wants to nationalize the oil industry, the Birtish approached the CIA to help topple him.  Millions of cash were transported to Iran to pay local opposition leaders to protest Mosaddegh as a tyrant, dictator.  Radio stations were put up and broadcasted anti-Mosaddegh propaganda.

Color Revolutions have the same MO.  Hong Kong, Thailand, ..etc...
