In 1982, China and India have roughly the same GDP at 200 billion.  India's GDP per capita was $275 and China $200.  In a way, Indians' thinking are still stuck in 1982.

10 years later, in 1992, China's GDP doubled to $427 billion at $366 per capita while India just increased by less than half at 428 billion with a GDP per capita at $318.

Let's look at the range from 1995 - 2001.  1995 was the year India joined the WTO and 2001 was the year China joined WTO. 

in 1995 India's GDP was $360 billion, China at $735 billion.  In 2001, India's GDP was at $485 billion while China was at $1.3 trillion.

 

After China joined the WTO, it's economy skyrockected. See the graphs below.
