I once watched a TV film about bears on Kodiak Island. The presenter came across an empty tent that he said belonged to a young couple who went there to student bears. Being good naturalists, they went to befriend the bears there, arming themselves with nothing except good intention. They were not seen after that.

Gorby went out of his way to befriend the West-- armed with nothing but good intention!!! And Putin is left to pick up the pieces.
