with the people I talked to.  In Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand.  I asked a Thai friend when the switch happened.  Was it because of the sanctions on Russia?  He said no.  It started to trickle in the last 5 years after the internet became widespread.  They are more aware of the attrocities the US commited across the world.  They are aware of US provocations within their own domestic political and cultural system.  

Outside US. nowadays, it is very hard to for the US to spread its own propaganda like they did before because of the ease of access to alternative information via the internet.  Nowadays, it is not easy for US NGOs like NED and USAID to start color revolutions.  I think the Hong Kong riots were the last successful ones and others that were planted a long time ago such as Pakistan ousting of Imran Khan.  New ones are harder implement.

Southeast Asia has nothing to gain from siding with the US.  The economic gains are not that profound as they were a couple of decades ago.  By siding with the US, Southeast Asian governments, by assocation, in nature, very fragile, and subjected to the whims of Washington. Regime change can happen anytime when each respective governement does not serve American interests or its self-defined "rule based order".
