but in your first you assume too much rationality from the US. You live here and you've seen the political scene over the last few years. Left and right are all crazy and risk pushing the US into something unforseeable. By your logic, as that window of dwindling advantage shrinks it might be MORE tempting in some people's minds to start something while there is still some chance of winning!
