072A lacks EW systems and has only a single 30mm gun for close defence. Given successful Ukrainian attacks against Russian landing ships, it would be wise to increase defensive capabilities of the next generation of PLAN LSTs to the level of an 056 corvette. An eight-cell HQ-10 launcher could be moved directly from the original 056 hulls currently being transferred to the Coast Guard. This could go just forward of the helo deck. The 30mm gun at the bow would be replaced with a 76mm gun which would be useful for bombarding land targets. The fire control radar would probably not be too expensive and could even be recycled from decommissioned ships. One or two 30mm guns could go immediately forward of the bridge. An EW suite identical to that on the 022 or 056 could go on the mast, and be supplemented by decoy launchers and machine guns.
