  • As a young child, she learned French and English from her parents, then taught herself Modern Greek and some Ancient Greek
  • She became fluent in eight languages (English, French, Modern Greek, Italian, German, Icelandic, Hindi, and Bengali) and had knowledge of some twenty others (Ancient Greek, Urdu, and other Indian languages)
  • Savitri Devi also earned two masters degrees, in philosophy and chemistry, and a PhD in philosophy from the University of Lyons
  • Her first two books were her doctoral dissertations: Critical Essay on Theophilos Kairis and Mathematical Simplicity
  • Savitri Devi also had a vast knowledge of religion and history, particularly ancient history.
  • But then she abandoned academic life and underwent a spiritual crisis at the end of her studies. She became fascinated by the rising Nazi Party in Germany.

A self-described 'nationalist of every nation,' Savitri Devi embraced National Socialism in 1929 in Palestine.

The Nazis held that the Aryan race was the basis of all civilisation, so Portaz went to India in 1932 to discover the supposed Aryan homeland for herself.

After settling in Calcutta, she worked for the Hindu nationalist movement, which defended Hindu tradition from all universalistic ideologies, such as Christianity, Islam, Communism, and liberal democracy.

1. While studying at Rabindranath Tagore's Shantiniketan Ashram in Bengal, Maximine Portaz, at the suggestion of some fellow students, took the pen name, Savitri Devi.

2. 'Savitri' is one of the Sanskrit names of the Sun, and 'Devi' means goddess.

3. After changing her name, she converted to Hinduism and dedicated herself in freeing the subcontinent from both British imperialism and Christianity, which she condemned as an anti-aryan faith.

Savitri's works

Her works have been reissued and distributed through various neo-nazi networks and she has been lionized as a foremother of Nazi ideology.

Her book, 'Gold in the Furnace,' urges true believers to trust that National Socialism will rise again.

Hitler - An avatar of Vishnu

  • Savitri's work, 'The Lightning and the Sun' (1958) synthesizes National Socialism and the Aryan cyclical theory of history and claims that Adolf Hitler was an avatar -- a human incarnation -- of the Hindu god Vishnu
  • According to Aryan tradition, history moves in cycles, beginning with a Golden Age or Age of Truth and decline from that point until one reaches the nadir, the fourth age, the Dark Age or Kali Yuga, in which evil and falsehood reign
  • At that point, the forces of decay expire from their own corruption and a new Golden Age dawns
  • According to Hindu tradition, the present Kali Yuga will be ended and the next Golden Age will be inaugurated by the tenth avatar of Vishnu, Kalki
  • When Hitler's star was rising, Savitri Devi and many Indians thought that he was Kalki. When he was defeated, she concluded that Hitler was not the tenth avatar, but only his forerunner and that Kalki is yet to come

She died on October 22, 1982, at a friend's house in England. Her ashes were laid to rest with full fascist honours, next to American Nazi leader George Lincoln Rockwell.
