She could have had considerably more social privilege in the US by using her father's surname, she's legally white and looks it too so it would have been much easier for her with job/school applications etc. Choosing otherwise was more gutsy than the average ABC can imagine. Choosing China despite her background was more patriotic than most Chinese-born Chinese.
