A loooong time ago when I was in England. I picked up a book from a library which talked about "anti-tank rifles", which were used in the early days of tank warfare when tank armour was still pretty thin, I think. The the calibre was greater than 7.62mm though, One used tungsten bullets and the bore of the riffles that fired them progressively narrowed in order to achieve very high muzzle velocity.
