Life expectancy in the United States fell to 77 years in 2020—dropping by nearly two years compared to 2019—according to a federal report, a finding that highlights the devastating impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, which claimed more than 350,000 lives last year.

    KEY FACTS

  • According to data published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), the life expectancy at birth dropped by 1.8 from 78.8 years in 2019.
  • This is the biggest decline in life expectancy the U.S. has seen since World War II when that figure fell by 2.9 years in 1943.
  • The life expectancy for men in 2020 stood at 74.2—a decline of 2.1 years—while women’s life expectancy declined by 1.5 to 79.9 years.
  • The data also shows that death rates rose for every age group except children aged between 1 and 4, with Covid-19 being the third largest cause of death.

    WHAT TO WATCH FOR

U.S. health officials believe that 2021 may actually surpass the grim numbers recorded last year as the death toll from Covid-19 has continued to rise. The CDC’s Robert Anderson told the Associated Press it is likely that the nation will see more than 3.4 million deaths in 2021, crossing the tally of 3.384 million tally set in 2020.
