He said he initially refused to join HSMC because their plan of 14 nm and 7 nm process will pose competition to TSMC. He joined HSMC as CEO and chairman of HSMC board until its last day. How could a noob company started a 14 nm fab right away when SMIC was still doing R&D at that time, and its CEO cum Chairman Chiang remain totally in the dark? Before its demise, government warned that HSMC would face financial trouble, and the HSMC outsource companies thought that it was a big scam.

As a person who refused to join a semi-conductor company if it will pose competition to TSMC，he tried to shift SMIC R&D effort from advanced process to packaging and integration, to Dr Liang strong objection. In less than a year, his abrupt departure together with the SMIC chairman who hired him, is a very obvious sign of the government mistrust on both of them.
