It was NOT a PLAN sub, or else there would have been activity by South Sea Fleet rescue ships. It probably was not a drone either, because of the limited PLAN response (although this is hard to say) and a collision with an object the size of PLAN's larger UUVs would have done a lot more damage. There may have simply been some sort of navigational error and the sub hit a rock or coral head, it has happened to USN subs in the past.
