In the past, when I actually was a little interested on what the Indians were like, a couple of things stuck out.

One was they had their problems. The other was their envy of China. But what they did in previous generations, books published in the 1950's 1960's 1970's 1980's, at least they still held on to the democratic principle of openness and they were honest about their problems.

Back then, Indians were more honest with themselves, including the caste system JMHO.

That's changed over these few decades.

What has not changed was the same Indian problems. It was filthy back then, it is still filthy now, just one example.

What has changed seems to me are two things.

1) For some reason the expectations kept growing. India as a superpower 1999.

2) Lately (meaning 10-20 years now) the Indian government liked painting rosy pictures of things, to the point now where everything that comes out of their mouths is completely meaningless, and is fiction.

I am on the outside and I can see it. And I am not even following it closely.

What the average Indian does to survive, it is not surprising.

During the pandemic, the average Indian had to fend for themselves, rely on their circle of contacts, because the government could not help, because,

1) exaggerated/downplayed their abilities for, and the seriousness of, the pandemic. Their growing expectations are thus displayed.

2) at the moment no one has a clue of what is going on on the ground in India, because the government does not want to know. Thus they have a total disregard for governance and truth. Ideally a government policy should be based on truth, or fact, but they don't need it. All they want is a rosy picture. They just say whatever they want to say. And as a consequence, no one inside India believes the government.

Then when we add the two new problems, to the old problems, that is what makes India into today's India.

If Biden is clueless, that is not surprising because he does appear to be senile. Also Americans are grossly ill-informed about the outside world. Some of what the American politicians say about China, that is totally false and completely nuts. Imagine what they think about India, who is viewed in a better light, but there less interest in India.

Biden and India, that is like dementia and delusion go on a date on Fantasy Island.
