The troops in the photo are firing gingals not too dissimilar from the ones used by the Qing forces during the Opium Wars, although these might not be muzzle-loaders. The man on the right does not appear to have shoes. In a few decades the PLA's numbers would be swelled by defecting KMT military units angered by postwar economic and political incompetence, and the PLA would gain artillery, armour, and then aircraft and naval units. Soon the Nationalists were driven to Taiwan and Jinmen, and the US-led forces would be fought to a stalemate in Korea. Even amid the chaos of the Cultural Revolution, the PLA would successfully repel the Soviet Union and retake Xisha from Vietnam. The ragtag guerillas would eventually grow into one of the most powerful military forces on the planet.
