There is a suburb north of Toronto, where a lot of Hong Kong immigrants came during the period of the handover and afterwards. There were a lot of dim sum restaurants. Those big restaurants were there for about 15 years, then they abruptly closed.
The Hong Kong people who came to Markham, Ontario, seemed to have left.
Chinese people in Canada, most still do everything with other Chinese. If you are a Chinese in Toronto, you may not even have to speak English to survive day to day, everything you do can be in Cantonese or Mandarin. Your accountant speaks your language. Your lawyer speaks your language. Your barber speaks your language.
Even I am that bad. Some days, if I step outside the house, I only speak my rural dialect to the people I happened to run across. But I am proud to say over the years I have picked up some Mandarin and I can actually speak some! So now, does not matter, Cantonese or Mandarin, even someone like me do not have to use English in Toronto! I guess that always been the case in Vancouver too.
To a Chinese, does not matter. You can stay here or go back. You can be a Chinese anywhere. Whatever you like. I assume most people went back, for the money. It is probably easier to make money over there than here.
The Canadian government says there are 300,000 expats, Canadians in Hong Kong. That is a lot of people, and these are not white Liberals, these are Hong Kong Chinese originally who after getting their Canadian citizenship, left Canada to return home.
Long story made short, people in Hong Kong, who have not been in Canada lately, especially the past year during the pandemic, do not understand how bad it is now.
Regardless of why a Chinese leaves China to find a life aboard, the last 300 years, could be cultural reasons political prosecution, or economic reasons, with the latter outnumbering the former by 20 times or 50 times. Regardless, you still got to make money to survive.
And it is still easier to make money in Hong Kong/China than it is most other places, with America being the exception.
Another factor here, is that Hong Kong people are spoiled.
Some places in the world, have no use for people with such a mentality.
For example, the Kong nu. The Hong Kong girl, might not find her ways approved of in white Canadian society. So she probably remains in her own circle (all Cantonese) to feel comfortable. I means, what's the point of her being in Canada? LOL!
