The article had two lines that kind of summed it up, so it was just way too long.

The most ambitious—and most important—aspect of this strategy must be showing China and the rest of the world that the United States remains strong and can reliably revive the sources of its power and leadership. China’s rulers have built their strategy on a profound underestimation of the United States. By upending the exaggerated reports of its demise, the United States could change China’s calculus and find a way toward sustainable coexistence on favorable terms.

This is essentially asking or demanding that China must believe American propaganda.

It is shocking. The Chinese are not suppose to think or have strategies.

The United States must also band together with allies and partners in Asia and Europe to push back against problematic Chinese behavior.

Same old pipe dream. This America writer of the article should tell the allies what is in it for them, and what if China offers a better deal (like it has been for the last 40 years which is why it became the world's top trading nation).

Furthermore, no one listened to the US demands to not join A.I.I.B., or not to participate in the Belt Road Initiative, or just count the number of countries that actually banned Huawei.

The United States must offer more to what they are currently offering their allies in the United States struggles with China. In fact, what are they exactly offering, and what do they intend to offer in the future? Surprised we did not read a comment on that, in such a long article?

JMHO, the advice here of how the United States should counter China, is to make China believe American propaganda, and that American allies will automatically align with them against China when push comes to shove. Most normal people would rather stay neutral play off both sides. Maybe belief in American exceptionalism makes the article believe US allies will abandon human nature and think of America first instead of themselves first.

This reeks of panic.
