It could be the end of its hegemony as the world knows. Then, any 2-bit power would challenge the US. The US as a hegemon maintains its control over others by implicit threat but if it has to fight multiple concurrent wars to prove it still has what it takes to defeat and suppress its enemies then it is doomed. It can not afford it economically, financially and militarily for long and the US will implode.
It would take an extremely irrational government to take that kind of gamble. Even if the Trump administration is that irrational (which it is NOT), it is too mired in pandemic to start a war anytime soon.
