The original ship was a gift from the French to the nascent US Navy, although John Paul Jones was at one point a slave trader: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Bonhomme_Richard_(1765). But the white left has targeted statues of abolitionists and elks recently - they are Americans, so I don't expect them to know about American history. The modern ship's firefighting system had been shut off during repairs. Sabotage is unlikely unless it was an inside job, one can't just drive onto a navy base.
