Modi did not want to be seen as a wimpy leader in the eyes of his opposition party.  But he could not hide it. There was an agreement for both sides to withdraw which Indians did. When they went back to check if the Evil Chinese withdrew as agreed, they were ambush by the barbaric communist Chinese.  They used rods barded with nails to attack. No one ever expected that.  A lesson learned by all Indians not to ever trust the Chinese.
